Your application for the Master’s program in Biotechnology

To apply for the Master’s program in Biotechnology, simply check the admission requirements and then upload your documents online through the HohCampus application portal by the application deadline. The application portal opens in mid-April for applications for the winter semester and in mid-December for the summer semester.

To the 1st subject-related semester

  • Winter semester: 15 June
  • Summer semester: not possible

For a higher subject-related semester

  • Winter semester: 15 June
  • Summer semester: 15 January

How to apply

Apply online via the HohCampus application portal for the Master's degree program in Biotechnology and upload the application documents in the application portal. There you can also check the status of your application at any time.

Admission requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree with a concentration on natural sciences or engineering (3 years, 180 ECTS)
    Bachelor’s degrees in the following subjects are accepted: 
    • Food Science and Biotechnology
    • Food Technology
    • Biology
    • Biochemistry
    • Biotechnology
    • Bioprocess Engineering
    • Chemistry
    • Bachelor’s program in Nutritional Science at the University of Hohenheim 
    In addition to the degree programs listed above, the selection committee can recognize other degrees as equivalent.
  • Academic achievements in the following subjects: 
    •   Biotechnology (25 points)
    •  Biochemistry (25 points)
    •   Organic chemistry (15 points) 
    •   Molecular biology (25 points) 
    •   Microbiology (25 points) 
    •   Process engineering (15 points) 
    You need 6 ECTS credits per category to receive the points for that subject. 
    At least 70 points are required.
  • English B2 

Application documents

You must upload the following application documents during the online application process:

  • Bachelor’s degree certificate and transcripts of work completed so far
    • If you do not yet have your Bachelor’s certificate, then please submit a transcript of records that includes all examinations already completed with all grades and an average grade.
    • The degree certificate must be submitted no later than 15 December of the year for which admission is requested.
    • Complete and printed data collection sheet to detail the academic work in the specific subjects

  • Proof of English language skills 
    This can be shown with the following:
    • TOEFL (internet-based, at least 90 points)
    • IELTS (at least 6.5 points)
    • UNIcert II (min. grade “good”)
      If 50 percent of the work required for the UNIcert II certificate has been completed by the application deadline, then you need to include proof of this with your application.
      The completed UNIcert II certificate must be submitted no later than 1 October for the winter semester of the year for which admission was granted.

  • If you were already enrolled in the same or an equivalent Master’s degree program:
    • Documentation that your right of admission to an examination is still valid for that degree program and
    • that you are not currently undergoing an examination procedure 

Note: Because this is an online application on the application portal, please do not send documents by post!

To allocate the available places, a ranking list is created. In the Admission Regulations (english version) you can find detailed information on how points are assigned.
