Your application for the Master’s in Environmental Sciences – Soil, Water & Biodiversity

To apply for the Master’s program in Environmental Sciences – Soil, Water & Biodiversity, simply check the admission requirements and then apply online through the HohCampus application portal by the application deadline.

The application portal opens for applications for the winter semester in mid-November of the previous year for non-EU applicants and at the end of January for EU applicants. It is not possible to start the program in the summer semester due to the double degree structure.

How to apply

The degree program is offered as a European double Master’s degree program. You can start at one of four different universities:

Wageningen University, Netherlands (WUR)
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden (SLU)
University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria (BOKU)
University of Hohenheim, Germany (UHOH)

In the second year of studies, you switch to one of the other four universities. When applying, you must state which university you want to start at and where you want to spend your second year.

The application needs to be submitted through the Hohenheim application portal no matter which university you want to start at.

The application must be submitted through the Hohenheim application portal no matter which university you choose to start at.

If you choose to start the program at BODU, UHOH, or WU, then all applications need to be submitted to the “HohCampus” application portal. Your documents will then be forwarded to the selected home and host universities, where the formal admission process will take place.

If you decide to start your studies at SLU, you need to apply at universityadmissions.se (international students) or at antagning.se (only in Swedish and for Swedish students, but EU students are also welcome to apply using this portal) and also additionally with the EnvEuro consortium in the UHOH application portal (see above).

The application portal universityadmissions.se is open for all non-Swedish applicants until 15 January.
Alternatively, Swedish and EU applicants can apply using antagning.se between 17 March and 15 April (please note that this application portal is only available in Swedish).

Admission requirements

An above-average Bachelor’s degree in environmental or natural sciences or a related program at a university in Germany or abroad or at a university of applied sciences with a standard period of study of at least 3 years or an equivalent degree (totaling 180 ECTS) (for other “related programs,” see Annex 2 of the Admission Regulations).
If the final grade or average grade of this degree is not above average, the applicant must also prove their special aptitude for the degree programs (for details see Admission Regulations § 4).
Proven knowledge in at least two of these three disciplines: mathematics/statistics; biology/ecology; chemistry/physics
Proven English language proficiency at TOEFL 92 (ibt), IELTS academic 7.0, or Cambridge C1 Advanced level.
APS certificate (only applicants from China, India, and Vietnam)

You must upload the following application documents during the online application process:

Your university entrance qualification (e.g., Abitur, A-levels, high school diploma)
Bachelor’s certificate and transcript of records
Proof of English language proficiency
Résumé (CV)
Optional: Proof of special aptitude for the degree program, documentation of an above-average degree, letter of motivation

Yes, unless you are a citizen of one of the following countries: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United States of America, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, or Guyana.

OR if you have completed a university degree in one of the above-mentioned countries or in the European Union (with English as the language of instruction throughout the degree program).

If this is not the case, you must submit a TOEFL ibt, IELTS academic, or Duolingo test result.

Yes, that is possible. Simply upload your current transcript of records (complete list of grades for all courses you have taken in all semesters of your studies). You can submit your final degree certificate or at least documentation that you have completed your Bachelor’s degree by 15 December of the year in which you start your studies in Hohenheim.

If you are not sure whether your degree is classified as “above average,” you can ask your examinations office to issue a ranking list indicating your position compared to your fellow students who graduated in the same year as you.

If your university does not issue ranking lists, you can ask one of your professors to write a letter of recommendation comparing your academic performance with that of your fellow students and ideally stating whether you are in the top 10%, top 20%, etc. of your cohort.

There are also other ways to compensate for a below-average degree. See the following point.

Particular aptitude must be documented if your academic background is not clearly suitable for the degree program or if your final grade is not above average.

You can provide documentation as follows:

Persuasive letter of motivation (maximum one page and in English)
Letter of recommendation from a professor (see previous point)
Documentation of relevant practical experience or further education (employment contract, job reference, certificates, etc.)

No, we do not. Ask the person writing your letter of recommendation to print it on official university letterhead, stating his/her name, position, and contact details. The letter must be signed and ideally bear the seal of the university.

Letters of recommendation that do not meet these requirements will not be accepted.
