Admission requirements

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree or at least three years of university studies in a social science program with a grade of “good” (2.5) or better
The prerequisite is the completion of a Bachelor’s degree program or at least three years of comparable university studies in social sciences (especially communication science, sociology, psychology, political science) with a final university grade of at least good (2.5) or equivalent. A program is recognized as being a social science program if it includes at least 70 credits in modules or courses that focus on social science theories, methods, and findings.
  • Courses in the area of social science methodology making up at least 15 credits
Courses will be counted as social science methodology if the title indicates that they deal with knowledge and competencies in one of the following areas:

    • Social science methodology (science theory and logic)
    • Research process and logic (e.g., measurement, selection procedures, research designs)
    • Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection (e.g., surveys, content analysis, observation)
    • Quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis (e.g., statistics, document analysis)
    • Basic knowledge of quantitative research methods and/or statistics is recommended.

In addition, courses will be counted as social science methodology if additional, new knowledge on social science methods was conveyed by carrying out independent empirical research even though this is not evident in the title of the course. In this case, you must include an additional description that states what knowledge on social science methodology from the areas mentioned above was conveyed in which of the courses.

Carrying out empirical research without learning additional methodological competencies in the context of research and final theses or in other courses in which social science methods are primarily applied does not count as a course in social science methodology!
