Food Science and
Biotechnology

How are new, sustainable products created for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries? How can we improve technical processes and use biochemical methods to process raw materials efficiently?

The Bachelor’s degree program in Food Science and Biotechnology deals with these and other questions. Here you will learn how innovative manufacturing processes and biochemical reactions are used to produce food and other products in a sustainable, ecological, and healthy way. The degree program offers you numerous modules with which you can individually design your studies. Courses in the laboratory, modern technical equipment, and experimental pilot plants ensure a high level of hands-on experience. If you want to help shape the future of the food and biotechnology industry, you've come to the right place.

Compare degree programs

What are the differences between the programs of the Faculty of Natural Sciences? You want to study something related to nutrition, chemistry, or food, but you’re not sure yet which program is right for you? We compared our natural science degree programs using an apple as an example. In the comparison, we explore how a particular degree program views an apple. This way you can see the similarities and differences of the programs at a glance and compare them.

Studies

In the Bachelor's degree program in Food Science and Biotechnology, you will learn the biochemical, microbiological, and technical fundamentals of the gentle processing of natural raw materials into foods, special foods, and dietary and biotechnological products. In addition, you consider optional economic, legal, and quality assurance aspects. This means that you'll deal with topics like process technology, biochemistry, biotechnology, quality assurance, and microbiology. You can customize 35% of your studies and choose courses according to your interests. For example, you can major in dairy, grain, or biotechnology, develop dairy and meat alternatives, or try your hand at making liquor and beer.

Study abroad

Would you like to study and research abroad? Then take advantage of the opportunity to spend a semester in another country. It is guaranteed to be once in a lifetime experience. During this time, you will not only broaden your horizons, but also develop personally. This is an opportunity to consolidate your language skills and gain intercultural competence. We have over 80 partner universities in Europe and all over the world. A semester abroad also offers you advantages when looking for a job. This is because many international companies prefer applicants who have already studied and lived abroad.
