Comparing degree programs

Apple perspective:
Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences

You want to study something related to business or communication, but you're not sure yet which program is right for you? We compared our business and social science majors using an apple as an example.

In the comparison, we explore how a particular degree program views an apple. This way you can see the similarities and differences of the programs at a glance and compare them.

Digital Business Management

The Digital Business Management degree program looks at all processes in the company from a digital perspective. Experts in this field analyze precisely in which areas digital technologies can make everyday work easier, improve the customer experience, or increase quality and efficiency. For example, a digital and automated measurement system would be used to determine soil moisture and irrigate the apple orchard with just the right amount of water.

Digital Business Managers could look at whether using robots to pick fruit would be profitable for the company. They would also consider using artificial intelligence to optimize the time of harvest and dispatch to supermarkets. Customers would be informed exactly which fertilizer was used, when the apple was harvested, and exactly where it was grown – complete transparency for the customer.

Communication Science

Communication scientists are concerned with how apples are perceived, discussed, and communicated in the media and the public. They analyze the relevant stakeholders in the apple market and public opinion on apples.

They help businesses and organizations communicate the benefits of apples and apple juice to apple juice drinkers and other audiences. They review the success of apple juice advertising and the public relations of apple juice producers. They also keep in mind the risks and problems of apples and the apple market and develop appropriate communication strategies.

Sustainability & Change

The Sustainability & Change program focuses on how economic processes and products can be made more sustainable. Experts in this field look at the entire production chain: Where can production be made more sustainable? What varieties of apples are best suited to the environment? How can transport routes be kept as short as possible? How could packaging be made innovative and sustainable?

Sustainability & Change graduates also consider whether all employees are paid appropriately and which working conditions need to be changed to make work even more enjoyable. If necessary, they adjust the apple price upwards - quality and care for the environment and employees costs more. Or they develop innovative processes and products that make it possible to achieve the same standards in a more resource-efficient way.

Information Systems

Information Systems specialists analyze and optimize the environmental data and production data of apples so they can make predictions about the apples’ quality class with the help of artificial intelligence. They develop systems that can check whether the refrigeration chain of a crate of apples is consistently maintained and help create self-driving vehicles that bring the apples to the stores in the fastest way possible.

In the store, the software developed by information system specialists supports all business processes, from cashless payment at the checkout to automatic reordering of new apples to ensure a seamless apple supply.

Education for Business and Economics

Many business educators teach in commercial vocational schools. They investigate the apple market with the vocational students. In the process, the vocational students learn about problems faced by juice companies, for example, in purchasing and reselling, and what strategies such a company needs in order to sell apple juice to potential customers.

However, business educators can also work in companies, especially in the human resources department. The task is to select suitable employees from applications who will later, for example, successfully sell the company's apple juice. They are also responsible for continually developing the skills of employees - for example, through training on the latest trends in the apple market - so that the juice company can hold its own against the competition in the long term.

Business Administration and Economics

The economic sciences consist mainly of business administration and economics. They therefore study the development of the apple market over the next 10 years. Where are there growth potentials or bottlenecks? You analyze the apple orchard from a cost-benefit perspective - how economically does the orchard operate? Which varieties sell well, which poorly?

They think about how they can sell even more apples, develop marketing concepts, and plan advertising measures. They monitor costs incurred, improve the production process, keep an eye on personnel requirements, and determine the optimum price of an apple so that apple production is worthwhile for all parties involved (customers, employees, and company).
