You will learn to develop and design software from a computer science perspective. The business side teaches you to evaluate the potential applications of digital technologies in an operational context and to use them to develop new business models and support business processes.

Information Systems professionals are specialists in designing information and communication systems. They see these as socio-technical systems in which humans and machines work together. The aim is to use these systems according to business criteria in such a way that they provide value-adding data and information for business decisions and support communication among all parties involved. As data forms the basis of a digital society and business decisions, both artificial intelligence and data science represent important aspects of Information Systems. This involves the systematic analysis of large volumes of data that are stored in databases of companies, for example, and are waiting to be explored. The aim of using such modern technologies is always to derive strategically significant knowledge for practice and science.

You deal with the following questions, among others:

• How can business processes be digitalized?
• How can artificial intelligence and data science methods generate value-adding knowledge for companies?
• How can information technology be used to optimize business processes?
• How can software development processes be carried out effectively and efficiently in order to solve problems in companies and society?
• How can information systems be designed to be user-friendly and accessible and thus meet the requirements of users and companies?
• How can companies use strategically important data to make more efficient and effective decisions? 
• Which new technologies are relevant and forward-looking for the company's success? 

At the same time, from the 3rd semester onwards, you will begin to hone your individual professional profile and deepen your knowledge. There are numerous elective modules to choose from. In the semi-elective area, you choose a certain number of modules from the fields of business administration and economics, computer science, information systems, data science, and social sciences. In the free elective area you can choose from the entire range of courses offered by the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences.

You want to spend a semester abroad? The 5th semester is ideal for this. The credits earned abroad can be recognized in both the elective area and the semi-elective area.

At the end of your studies, you will write a Bachelor's thesis and work on an applied final project. With your Bachelor's thesis, you show that you can use the skills you have acquired to solve a specific research problem. In the final project, you will apply the modeling, design, and implementation skills you have learned to practical tasks.

• Interest in digital technologies as well as in questions related to business and information technology
• Good math skills and the willingness to acquire formal-logical knowledge to describe information technology concepts Don't worry, if your math skills are not the best, we offer numerous support options (e.g. math pre-course). We do our best to make sure you don’t fail out of the program just because of the statistics courses!
• Analytical and conceptual thinking skills
• Good communication abilities and fluency in German
• Good English language skills to understand compulsory modules in English
• Independence: At the university, you are your own boss and no one checks whether you have registered for all modules. From now on it's up to you!
• Self-discipline: Do you attend lectures regularly? From now on, no one checks to make sure you’re attending courses. This is a great freedom and at the same time you should know that you are responsible for motivating yourself from now on. Here’s a little tip: Find friendly fellow students and motivate each other!

To be successful in a profession, more is needed than just theoretical knowledge. Soft skills, consisting of personal, social, and methodological competences, also play an important role. We offer you an extensive range of further training: Language skills, project management, communication and presentation techniques, IT and media skills, personal development, and techniques for studying and working. This way you can improve these skills during your studies in an easy and cost-effective way.

Here you will learn how the contents and theories taught are implemented and applied in business practice. At the same time, you can make valuable contacts, as companies like to advertise internships at these events.

Research projects are a wonderful opportunity to apply learned methods and skills in practice, to test your own ideas, and to find solutions to problems. In the project "Humboldt reloaded," you can work in a team on the stages of a real research project, from preparing a summary of the current state of research and selecting methods for your own research to analyzing and presenting data.
